project: Arts of film: a database and digital archive of Arts Council-funded documentary films 1953-1999

Between 1953, and 1999 when it closed its film department, Arts Council England commissioned or participated in the production of 485 films, which recorded all aspects of - mainly contemporary British - art. The subject matter, length and format of the films are as varied as they are eclectic. Moreover, because of the Council’s liberal attitude to sponsorship, and the creative freedom their commissions offered, they also attracted some of the best film-makers in the UK. project: Scottish Corpus of Texts and Speech (SCOTS)

SCOTS uses computer technology and the web to bring a unique electronic collection of Scots and Scottish English texts to scholars and the public. The resource contains written and spoken material, the latter with online audio/video clips, stored in a database along with extensive metadata. Linguists can investigate where particular words and phrases are used, and by whom. Displayed alongside the texts is a range of information about authors and speakers, so that it is possible to search for, e.g., “audio clips featuring Ayrshire women under 40”. [read more]

project: The Pompey Project: the evolution, structure and legacy of the Theatre of Pompey

The first scientific study of Rome’s first permanent theatre. Comprehensive documentation of all surviving remains, supplemented by new limited excavation at specific points targeted by our initial analysis. Creation of a definitive series of site-plans, sections, elevations keyed to a complete photographic record, and measured drawings. We have prepared an extensive archaeological register recording the details of every known artefact discovered on the site of the theatre complex for the past five centuries. [read more]
