project: Landscape/Cityscape

Investigation into the roles of Art in Public Spaces including the Internet by means of applying the metonym 'Landscape/Cityscape' to the production of art. The work was intended to engage with debates about art in public places and offer new possibilities of looking at landscape. Eventually there emerged three main developments within the project: one that followed the plan towards a portable landscape laid out in the original Fellowship proposal; one in relation to internet- and computer-based works of art; and one that followed a philosophical dimension relating to fluid conditions. project: The Listening Gallery: Integrating Music with Exhibitions and Gallery Displays, Medieval to Baroque

The Listening Gallery was a knowledge transfer collaboration between the Royal College of Music (RCM) and the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A). Stemming from research in music, art, design, and technology, the project connected objects in the V&A's collections with music that shares their rich and distinctive pasts. [read more]

project: Reanimating cultural heritage: digital repatriation, knowledge networks and civil society strengthening in post-conflict Sierra Leone

This multidisciplinary project is concerned with innovating 'digital curatorship' in relation to Sierra Leonean collections dispersed in the global museumscape. Extending research in anthropology, museum studies, informatics and beyond, the project considers how objects that have become isolated from the oral and performative contexts that originally animated them can be reanimated in digital space alongside associated images, video clips, sounds, texts and other media, and thereby given new life. project: Musicians of Britain and Ireland 1900-1950

The project provides recordings of performances by British and Irish musicians made between 1900 and 1950. owing to changes in company policy in the 1930s, their work was gradually excluded and mush of it forgotten. MBI is accessible through an attractive online search interface that also gives access to the complete recorded output of the AHRC Research Centre for the History and Analysis of Recorded Music (CHARM). project: Centre for the History and Analysis of Recorded Music

Aims to promote the study of music as performance through a specific focus on recordings. Its activities include a major discographic project, seminars and research projects. Traditionally, music has been studied as a text reproduced in performance - almost as if it were an obscure kind of literature. By placing performance at the centre of musicology - by promoting a musicology based on recordings and not just scores - CHARM aims to reduce the gulf between musicology and the listener. The goals of this workshop were:

  • To identify worthwhile goals for future inter-disciplinary projects involving collaboration between technologists and music researchers and practitioners.
  • To raise awareness among leading music researchers and practitioners of the ways in which technology can (and cannot) be used to improve musical research and practice.
