British Cartoon Archive Digitisation (BCAD) project
Primary tabs
Grant Holder:
The British Cartoon Archive Digitisation Project (BCAD) involved a redesign of the British Cartoon Archive (BCA) website, to increase its functionality and usefulness to researchers, teachers, and students, and the addition of new digital images from the BCA collection. The new digital images came largely from the huge Carl Giles collection, which arrived at the BCA in 2005 and is now totally accessible through the BCA online catalogue.
The project was designed to provide the widest possible access to the most important collection of material relating to British newspaper cartooning, thereby vastly increasing the cartoon's widespread "free view" availability. It also provides use and re-use of the archive content for teaching and research purposes.

The principal outcome of the BCAD project is the redesigned and enhanced BCA website at www.cartoons.ac.uk which includes 20,000 images of Giles original work and a selection of correspondence, reference information, and fan mail from the Giles' personal archive.
The Giles collection is cross-searchable with the 124,000 other images in the Centre's catalogue.
Digitisation of the archive created a catalogue of 7,500 cartoons in which the majority can be accessed in two versions - the original artwork, with markings for the printer, and the final published cartoon.
Data Formats created:
Extensible Markup Language (XML), Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), JPEG File Interchange Format (JPG), Tagged Image File Format (TIFF)
Metadata standards employed:
Dublin Core, simple (DC), Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS)
