Background

The Discovery Programme, an archaeological research institution funded by the Heritage Council, is seeking to fill the position of web designer for a six-month period (start Aug – end Dec) to work on the Mapping Death and WODAN projects. These projects are supported by the Heritage Council’s INSTAR funding. The projects aim to produce online databases of excavation and palaeoenvironmental records for access by researchers and the public.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement the development of accessible, cross-platform web sites and web applications
  • Translate ideas, workflows and wireframes into valid, semantically-structured web pages and stylesheets.
  • Candidate must be able to develop complex layouts using best practices.
  • Translate concepts and information into visually compelling user interfaces under tight deadlines.
  • Create prototypes to aid the planning phase of development projects.
  • Conduct feasibility reviews of design concepts with team members

Requirements:

  • 2 + years experience as a Web Designer
  • An excellent working knowledge of XHTML, HTML, CSS, Javascript, Flash and the latest W3C standards
  • Knowledge of Adobe Suite
  • Outstanding creative skills and user experience expertise
  • Experience of interface design
  • Good project management skills
  • Knowledge of web browser compatibility issues and workarounds (Mac and PC)
  • Strong understanding of web standards
  • Strong knowledge of accessibility laws and accessible development techniques
  • Experience of designing interfaces for Ruby on Rails applications would be an advantage

Relevant Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degrees in Arts or Sciences or equivalent experience.

The gross salary for the six-month period will be €15,471 (€30,942 annual equivalent).
The successful applicant must begin at the latest by 1st August 2009.
The job position is based in the Discovery Programme offices in Merrion Square, Dublin.
