An Introduction to Web 2.0 and the Social Web

Start: 17/03/2010 - 10:00

Web 2.0 and the Social Web are terms which are now being used widely. But what do these terms mean? And what, if anything, can Web 2.0 and the Social Web offer to museums, libraries and archives, especially small organisations with limited budgets and technical expertise?

This workshop will attempt to answer these questions. As well as demystifying the terms and the technologies, the workshop will also address the challenges which institutions may face in seeking to make use of Web 2.0 to support the needs of their users.

The Loudspeaker

Collaborations in conserving time-based art

A Colloquium co-sponsored by The Hirshhorn Museum and the Lunder Conservation Center, Smithsonian Institution.

• Registration: free

It’s widely understood that the special challenges of conserving film, video, computer-based, and interactive art demand collaborative efforts—shared responsibility among a wide array of disciplines. Over the past decade, best practices and shared principles about the care of this art have been developed…emulation, migration, variability. But how do these practices actually work in the real world? [read more...]

TESLA@UCL_SPECIAL] Artist, Curator and Lecturer Barbara Steveni: Beyond the Acid Free

Barbara Steveni conceived and co-founded the Artist Placement Group (APG), in London in 1966. Steveni’s innovative concept, based on a more holistic and intuitive view of Art than was current at the time, would take another 20 years to enter the mainstream. APG, later renamed O+I, acted as the precursor to current notions of ‘Artist in Residence’ and Public Art programmes. [read more...]

The European Social Science History Conference (ESSHC) has added Historical GIS to its History and Computing network to create a new network provisionally called "Historical Computing and GIS." It is hoped that that this new network will become a focus for Historical GIS research in Europe. This new network will be launched at the next ESSHC conference which will take place in Ghent, Belgium. [read more...]

Transforming Culture in the Digital Age

Start: 14/04/2010 - 10:00

End: 16/04/2010 - 18:00

Increasingly, we see new forms of culture being born in the variety of online environments. Users have become producers taking over production of online content and traditional hierarchies of users and producers are collapsing. At the same time, traditional memory institutions like museums, archives, libraries and acknowledged artists struggle to make sense of the transformations that are coming together with new technologies. [read more...]
