ULCC runs Web Archiving workshop, London 28th June 2010

First workshop based on ULCC’s successful Digital Preservation Training Programme (DPTP)

This half-day course on website archiving has developed out of the Digital Preservation Training Programme, delivered by ULCC since 2006. Website archiving is one very specialist strand of digital preservation that we thought had a place in the wider DPTP Course, which concentrates on explaining the Open Archival Information System model and aims to give practical advice and foster critical thinking in digital preservation. There has been a short module about web-archiving in DPTP for some time, and whilst not of interest to all DPTP students a majority found it a very popular module of the DPTP.

Why Web Archiving?

ULCC has been involved in web-archiving since 2004, and its staff also drafted the Preservation of Web Resources (PoWR) Handbook for the JISC. The PoWR project, although aimed at the HFE sector, suggested that there was growing concern among many institutional archivists and records managers that they might be holding unique records and documents on the web, that the range and quantity of these resources was increasing rapidly, and that they might be at risk. Many in the preservation world are not clear how to capture and preserve websites, web-based resources and records that exist on the web. Not everything that exists on the web is going to be worth capturing, and part of our thinking is to encourage the development of a clear selection policy to assist with the process.

About the workshop

The workshop on web archiving will be held at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) on 28 June 2010, starting at 10.00am and finishing at 1.30pm. It will look at the selection, capture and management of websites and web resources, introducing and assessing various organizational approaches and technological tools which exist. We will explore website archiving within the framework of the OAIS model which is currently taught on the DPTP, and illustrate the concepts with practical examples and exercises. Attendees should leave the course with the ability to understand the why, what and how of web archiving and be in a position to apply the learning to their own institutional context and requirements.

The course fee is £100 + VAT, refreshments are included and you can register your interest here: http://bit.ly/DPTPWebA

Outlook

ULCC’s team of archivists are working on additional follow-up courses to its successful DPTP course. Planning is underway for a half-day course on Institutional Repositories and their use as a preservation tool, and further details will be announced shortly.
