This conference will be the first major European conference concerned with the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in historical research. It follows on from a previous Historical GIS conference held at the Newberry Library, Chicago in 2004.

The main aim of the conference is to demonstrate how GIS can make a contribution to our understanding of the geographies of the past. We welcome submissions on all aspects of using GIS in historical research from database development to applied research in which GIS has made a contribution to understanding a historical topic. Contributions from PhD students are encouraged. Non-speaking participants who are keen to learn what is happening in the field are also welcome.

How to participate: Submissions can be of complete sessions or individual papers.

Submit a session: A session will last an hour and three quarters. Each session will usually have four 20 minute papers, allowing 5 minutes for questions after each paper and an additional 5 minutes. It also requires a chair. Other formats are also welcome. Once you have the required people please fill in a session application form available from the conference website shortly.

Deadline for applications: 15th Feb 2008.

Deadline for registration: 30th May 2008. (Registrations after this will attract an increased fee).

Venue: University of Essex, Colchester, UK. The University of Essex can be reached by a direct train service from London which runs every 10-20 minutes and takes around 1 hour. Costs: The conference is sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council’s Seminar Series enabling us to keep costs to a minimum. An all inclusive package including the registration fee, two nights’ en-suite accommodation, conference dinner on the 21st of August, and teas & coffees and lunches on both days will cost £199 full rate, or only £149 for postgraduate students. Other packages will also be available with day rates (which include tea & coffee) starting from £35 or £10 for postgraduates.
