From Digital Photography to Fine Art Painting: The Role of Technology for the 21st Century Artist
Thursday 31 July 2008 16:00 - 18:00
* Jeremy Sutton, artist
Location: Oxford Internet Institute, 1 St Giles, Oxford, OX1 3JS. This event is open to the public. If you would like to attend please email your name and affiliation, if any, to: events@oii.ox.ac.uk
Artist Jeremy Sutton will demonstrate how state-of-the-art digital media (Macintosh MacBook Pro computer, Corel Painter X software and a Wacom Intuos3 A5 tablet) can be used by the 21st Century Fine Artist to transform digital photographs into fine art paintings. This art-in-action improvised demonstration will provide a framework for discussing the challenges and opportunities presented by the use of digital media for painting.
Watch Jeremy in action
This will be Jeremy's second appearance at the OII. In 2007 he created two portraits of Ted Nelson in a live portrait drawing session using first traditional media (crayon / pastel / gouache) and then painting with digital media (Macintosh computer / Corel Painter / Wacom tablet).
Watch Jeremy and Ted (webcast)
From OII Director Bill Dutton's blog: 'Jeremy Sutton delivered one of the most entertaining and informative seminars the OII has ever organized. If you have an interest in the role of digital media in shaping artistic expression, from brush strokes to business models, then you might find the Webcast of this event to be informative and provocative. Jeremy doesn't tell us about the impact of digital media, but shows us by doing a portrait using traditional media and then moving to digital painting. His subject, Ted Nelson, the person who coined the term 'hypertext' adds to the discussion, not only through his comments on software, but also by entertaining all with a couple of songs while his portrait is being drawn.'
This event is supported by the e-Horizons project.
