event: Exploring software for music and audio: Cutting edge techniques and enabling technologies.

31/05/2008
Europe/London

Bristol Institute of Technology presents coda, a symposium exploring various facets of software and its development across a range of music and audio applications.

Invited speakers include: Julian Storer (JUCE, Tracktion), John Eacott (Loose Tubes, generative music), Nick Rothwel, Apple Pro Audio.

The workshop is free but participants must register.

All around us the sound world that we experience and take for granted is constantly evolving. Every year brings new sonic experiences: at the cinema, on television, in computer games, in art galleries in fact, almost everywhere. Advances in computing power provide new opportunities to create and process sounds in real-time that were impossible even five years ago. This constantly unfolding sonic and technological landscape is inspiring to both artists and scientists.

Software and software development for music and audio takes many forms: from large corporate systems providing flexible and sustainable frameworks for the professional audio and media industries; to the bespoke, often transient projects of individual artists and musicians. Among these various forms and approaches, many of the issues for both users and developers are shared, sometimes these approaches will conflict, and as a result important questions are raised.

Throughout the day a range of experts will present their work, both technical and creative, with a view to raising some of these important questions. Themes of the day include: software for live performance, art installations, studio/location recording, composition, DSP and frameworks/platforms (C/C++, Java, Max/MSP). Towards the end of the day there will be an opportunity to discuss these and other issues with the day's speakers. In addition to these activities there will be opportunities, at various points during the day, to experience and interact with the software, systems and creative work presented.
