The OeRC is pleased to welcome Dr Chris Lintott from the Department of Physics, to present a seminar entitled Dealing with Images by the Millions - Citizen Science and Galaxy Zoo on Tuesday 24 November 2009

This seminar is open to all and will start at 2pm in the OeRC Access Grid Room (room 277 - access available via 7 Keble Road).

This seminar may be broadcast with permission via video-link to other e-Research South venues. Only the speaker will be visible from other locations. Recording of this seminar is prohibited.

Galaxy Zoo is the world's largest and most successful citizen science project, having engaged almost 250,000 volunteers in the task of classifying images of galaxies. Chris Lintott, the principal investigator, will discuss the challenges of employing a distributed citizen science approach, and discuss the development of advanced interfaces, the connection to machine learning and the potential for future projects.

Chris Lintott is a researcher in the Department of Physics in Oxford, where he arrived in 2006 following a PhD at University College London. As well as running the Galaxy Zoo project and collaboration, he works on the chemical signatures of star formation in extragalactic environments. Heavily involved in outreach, he is best known as co-presenter of the BBC's long-running Sky at Night program.
