Edinburgh: City of Print is a joint AHRC and Museum Galleries Scotland funded partnership project between the Scottish Archive of Print and Publishing History Records (SAPPHIRE) and City of Edinburgh Museums. The project aims to highlight Edinburgh’s rich printing and publishing heritage through the online provision of photographs, film and sound recordings relating to the collections of City of Edinburgh Museums.

project: Dissenting academy libraries and their readers, 1720-1860
Grant Holder: Professor Isabel Rivers
The specific aim of this new project is to analyse and compare the libraries of the principal Congregational, Presbyterian, and Baptist academies, and in particular the use of the books by the students. The main repositories of catalogues, loan registers, surviving books, student essays, and lecture notes are Dr Williams's Library, London, Harris Manchester College, Oxford, and Bristol Baptist College. project: Short term morphosyntactic change: Variation in Russian 1801-2000
Grant Holder: Professor Greville Corbett
Russian is a language with a rich and relatively stable system of inflectional morphology. Yet while the system of forms has changed relatively little, the use of these forms has undergone a remarkable degree of change over a short time period. Changes include distribution of cases, of gender and number values, and of the competing inflectional forms of adjectives. These changes are dramatic when taken individually; however they do not form an obvious single picture, and there is no tendency to eliminate these morphosyntactic choices. [read more]
project: The Gascon Rolls Project

The Gascon Rolls, held in the U.K. National Archives (C 61) are important to the study of the twelfth century acquisition of the great duchy of Aquitaine by the Plantagenet kings of England. This project will make the unpublished Gascon Rolls available in electronic form for both the research project itself, and for the international research community. The final version of the edition of the Gascon Rolls will be available in a mixture of text and translation, and calendar (summary translation) online. [read more]
project: Regnum Francorum Online
Grant Holder:
Regnum Francorum Online: interactive maps and sources of early medieval Europe, is a geospatial database with the aim of referencing historical events of Late Antiquity and Early Medieval (western) Europe to evidence in source-documents, compiling meta-data about the events, such as time, space and agency, and visualizing the events on interactive maps. This far, meta-data about more than 14.000 events are maintained in the database and avilable for further temporal and spatial analysis. [read more]
project: Mechanisms of communication in an ancient empire: The correspondence between the king of Assyria and his magnates in the 8th century BC
Grant Holder: Dr Karen Radner
The correspondence between Sargon II, king of Assyria (721-705 BC), and his governors and magnates is the largest text corpus of this kind known from antiquity and provides insight into the mechanisms of communication between the top levels of authority in an ancient empire. This website presents these letters together with resources and materials for their study and on their historical and cultural context. The research questions are: How did ancient empires cohere? What roles did long-distance communication play in that coherence? [read more]
project: Between Magna Carta and the Parliamentary State: the Fine Rolls of King Henry III 1248-1272
Grant Holder: Professor David Carpenter
A fine in the reign of King Henry III (1216–1272) was an agreement to pay the king a sum of money for a specified concession. The rolls on which the fines were recorded provide the earliest systematic evidence of what people and institutions across society wanted from the king and he was prepared to give. Surviving in almost continuous sequence from 1199, they are preserved in The National Archives at Kew, one for each regnal year. [read more]

The project aims to edit or re-edit and translate all 138 early English legal codes, edicts and treatises produced up to the time of Magna Carta 1215, and to provide each with an introduction and full commentary on all aspects of the texts, language and law. [read more]
