Details below:

EPSRC Industrial CASE PhD Studentship

School of Geography
Centre for Geospatial Science & Centre for Environmental Management with SciSys

The application of positioning and geospatial intelligence technology for real-time in-situ reporting and monitoring for environmental management

An EPSRC Industrial PhD CASE studentship with SciSys (see: http://www.scisys.co.uk) is available to conduct research into the application of positioning technologies (e.g. GPS), and geospatial intelligence technology for real-time in-situ reporting and monitoring for environmental management. The research builds on existing programmes within the three partner organisations and their knowledge of the scientific and commercial state-of-the-art. The research will investigate the potential for combining mobile phone-based accurate positioning and timing, high-quality digital photography and broad-band mobile communications with improved spatial search and image analysis technology, so that both experts and lay people can record and report environmental management information about infrastructure, biodiversity or ambient environmental conditions.

Students should have at least a 2:1 Honours degree or MSc in computer science, GIS, geography or a science-related discipline, and have an interest in the environment.

The EPSRC Industrial CASE PhD Studentship covers University tuition fees and provides an annual maintenance award of approximately £14,600 for three years. The studentship is open to UK or EU citizens who have been resident in the UK for the last 3 years, in line with Research Council requirements. Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor M Jackson, Email: Mike.Jackson@Nottingham.ac.uk or Professor R Haines-Young, Email: Roy.Haines-Young@Nottingham.ac.uk.

Applicants should send a copy of their curriculum vitae with the names and addresses of two referees, together with a statement outlining their academic interests and reasons for applying for this Studentship to Stella Fuller at stella.fuller@nottingham.ac.uk
