A very interesting blog post by Tom Scheinfeldt about how late 19th and early 20th century scholarship was dominated not by big ideas, but by methodological refinement and disciplinary consolidation. He claims that scholarship will have to shift back, after a theory-centric century of monographs, to an emphasis on methodological questions.
