blog: 3D Laser-Scanning at Merv, Turkmenistan

From September 1st - October 13th I will be taking part in a 3D documentation project at World Heritage Site Merv, Turkmenistan. ([[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merv|Merv on Wikipedia]]). The project is being conducted by the Institute of Archaeology (IoA) at University College London's (UCL) [[http://www.ucl.ac.uk/merv/|Ancient Merv Project]]. The project is also in collaboration with Plowman Craven Associates of the UK (whom will provide the scanning and GPS equipment for the project) and CyArk 3D Heritage Archive Network ([[http://www.cyark/org/|CyArk]]) of California, USA (whom will provide the project with computer storage for data and the server capacity to distribute it via the CyArk website freely to the world).

The project is aimed at substantially enhancing the documentation of the standing buildings and city defenses of this archaeological resource and to help build capacity in the Turkmen Ministry of Culture staff in approaches to, and standards of, site documentation.

For more information, please feel free to contact me (however, be aware that while on site I will have no internet access/communication).
