forum: Welcome to the Archaeology and 3D Technology forum

This forum aims to provide a means of communication for those working in the heritage sector and making use of laser scanning and other 3D recording techniques.

The forum will be a way to announce forthcoming events of interest to those working in this field, but also a means of discussing technical issues related to the practice of 3D recording in archaeology and historic building recording, and should be seen as an independent environment for creative thinking on the application of these techniques.

Membership of the group is open to all; please help to support the forum by inviting colleagues who would find this forum useful.

3D scanning

The field of 3D scanning is changing rapidly, as new scanning technologies come onto the market. My company will be exhibiting several technologies at the forthcoming TCT (Time Compression Technologies) Show in Coventry on the 26th - 27th September, as will many other companies in the field. Visit www.tctshow.com if you wish to attend.

You can also see our technology closer to home, as we are based in north London. If you want to visit our demonstration area, please call us on 020 8922 1000. As well as scanning, you will also see output devices including rapid prototyping, CNC machines and laser cutting (www.unimatic.com).

Time Compression Technologies show

That sounds very interesting, Steven! Feel free to announce the event on our general ICT Events calendar as I think others might be interested too!

3D Laser Scanning for Heritage

Forum members may be interested to read the recently published "3D Laser Scanning for Heritage". This free booklet, generated as part of the English Heritage funded 'Heritage3D' research project, provides advice and guidance to users on laser scanning in archaeology and architecture. A pdf version may now be downloaded from either the Heritage3D website - http://www.heritage3d.org - or via the free publications section of the main English Heritage website - http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/. This document is to be formally launched at RSPSoc 2007, the annual conference for the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society, which will be held at Newcastle upon Tyne University from 11th-14th September - see http://rspsoc2007.org for further details. Printed copies will be available at the conference, on the Civil Engineering and Geosciences Department stand, and then, following the conference, on request from Paul Bryan email paul.bryan@english-heritage.org.uk

I hope you all find this document interesting and look forward to receiving your comments in due course - both good and bad!
