group: Archaeology and 3D technology

Archaeology and 3D technology is a special interest group for archaeologists and heritage professionals working with 3-dimensional data and spatial analysis technologies, including laser scanning, LiDAR and other high-precision survey technologies. The group is a forum for the discussion of techniques, new applications, methodologies and philosophies of archaeological recording with 3D technology and aims to provide an environment for creative thinking on the applications of these techniques. The forum looks to find ways to push forward the boundaries of what is possible with spatial technology and archaeology, building on the work of the initial work of the Heritage3D project, and will be a means of communication for practitioners across this field.

The forum will cover many aspects of this theme, but relevant topics include:

* Survey techniques and data capture
* Multi-format data integration and analysis
* Data curation and management
* Data extraction, visualization and presentation

11/03/2010 - 13:30
12/03/2010 - 13:00

With the evolution of technologies for three-dimensional data acquisition, data handling and data representation, the future for three-dimensional geodata has already begun.

Three-dimensional City, Landscape and Terrain models are new or used differently than before. Whereas small size projects typically may start from scratch, this is currently unfeasible for country-wide models. Here existing 2D (cartographic) data has to be taken into account in order to derive valuable three-dimensional information.

The conference deals with the opportunities and challenges of [read more...]
